Island of the Blue Dolphin
One of our favorite middle school books to read together as a family is Island of the Blue Dolphin. This 1961 Newberry Medal winner tells the story of Karana, a young girl, and her efforts to survive alone on a repost island. After reading this adventure story our book club enjoyed a number of hands-on activities to help bring the story to life. Explore the Island of the Blue Dolphin as a family with these fun activities.
Tides Experiment
Spend a day at the beach and you will notice how the water level changes (sometimes pretty dramatically) on the beach. This is due to tides. Students can conduct a simple experiment at home to learn how tides occur.
Beach in a Jar
This is one of our favorite activities for bringing beach memories home! Using a few basic (maybe even recycled) items found around the house kids can make their own miniature beach scene in a jar with sand and some colorful shells.
